Back when I started this piece I had real high hopes, but due to a lack of time and resources it didn't come out exactly like how I wanted. This composition was loosely based off of a painting by Pontormo "The Deposition of Christ." The only part I really like about it is the red base, but ugh, just ignore those reflections, oi! Also, the rear Eva, representing Adam, is based off of some concept art for Eva 01. Though there's much about this one that still makes me cringe, I liked the concepts and research that went into this, so I made it a deviation.
Speaking of which, I will say the research I put into figuring the details of the Evas was much more interesting than this final piece. I should find some of those old sketches and scan them.
Recreating famous Renaissance/Baroque masterpieces .....with Evas. That is AWESOME. ^____^
Oh! Btw, I have the source painting in my Art History 1B book. Jacopo da Pontormo's .....Descent From The Cross (er the book has a different title than what you had) Maybe one is the name of the painting and the other is the biblical title of the scene?
I recognized it right away too since the one Mass-Production Eva crouching on the ground is based on a human figure who was crouching in a very impossible position (which signified the shift away from realism to emotional in European art) Sorry, just putting my train of thought in type..
Probably just me, but I kinda see a slight nod to The Oath of the Horatii between 01 and 03. ^~ Not sure what 00 and 04's poses remind me of (maybe an annunciation piece..?) And why am I trying to shoot holes in your brilliant drawing....?? XD;;
Humm, if there is one thing that doesn't work with your Adam, its gotta be the wings- the sketchiness is too apparent compared with the texture on everything else. =\
Ha... ::tries to imagine Asuka preaching nonviolence; tries and fails::
All in all, much, much cleverness in concept mixed with excellent execution!
Oh... My... God!!! It has been a long time since I've seen any Eva fanart. Its been an even longer time since I've since fanart of this greatness. Seriously! This is awesome work! I love Evangelion!! And this is too good not to favorite!!!!
Holy Crap, this is wonderful. I absolutely love the way to used an old master as a referance for this, the people at Gainax would kiss you. But god, I do love this. A favorite cannot express how much I love it. But I do....
why has no one commentred on this?! the world's gone mad i say! it's a shame the image is so small... you really can't make out the detail (such as the reflection on the floor, it took a while for it to click with me ^^) fantastic colouring styl and a truly origional idea. kudos to you.
p.s, it's nice to see some art of the rarly seen unit 04 (that is the one with the halo, right?)
Thanks for the comments, and yeah, that's Unit 04. It took me forever to get a pic of that guy, but I was surprised they actually had one. I was about ready to draw my own design for Unit 04, and I've actually considered going to back to that old sketch for a future piece. Sorry I don't have a larger size for this pic, if enough peeps express interest I might just go back and make a new Eva pic with the same sort of idea. I loved the show, but I'll admit Evas aren't at the top of my list of things I usually wanna draw. Thanks again for the comments!
. . . by the FEATURE BUS! :[)
